With 300km of maintained ski slopes, Val d'Isere has something for every skier or snowboarder. A classic Savoyard village, when combined with neighboring Tignes, Val d'Isere forms what is known as one of the largest skiing areas in the 3 Valleys known as L'Espace Killy after the Olympic champion Jean Claude Killy, who was born in the area. The area has enough black slopes to challenge the most experienced skiers and snowboarders and offers a broad range of difficulty for anyone to practice their ski or snowboarding skills, whether in a group, a private instructor or on his/her own.
Recently upgraded lifts and covered magic carpets in ski schools' area for beginners were made to ensure the comfort for anyone, no matter one's level of experience. The area of Solaise has been regraded in recent years and the slope that used to be too steep for novices has become one of the best for beginner ski lessons in the French Alps. Other good areas for ski or snowboard lessons are areas served by Madeleine Express lift and La Daille.
However, given the abundance of difficult slopes and its Olympic heritage, Val d'Isere appeals more to intermediate and experienced skiers, who come here to perfect their style at one of the numerous reds and blacks and some of the best off-piste terrain and scenery that is second to none in the French Alps. Note that the runs classification in Espace Killy is known to catch even more experience skiers off-guard - what is considered to be a blue slope could be easily classified as a red while blacks will properly test one's skills and endurance.
During holiday seasons the central areas can get busy with crows who before often stop to pose for a picture before hitting popular apres-ski spots such as the famous La Folie Douce.
